Learning Outcomes

Students will learn why financial crises occur, how they evolve, and by which means they can be prevented or, as the case may be, resolved. They should become familiar with modern methods of solving coordination games and learn to apply these methods to financial market issues.

Content

This advanced-level course introduces the economic theory of financial crises. The theory is discussed against the backdrop of recent financial crises and the history of the international financial system. Many crises can be viewed as coordination games where markets suddenly swing from a socially efficient equilibrium to a socially inefficient equilibrium. An emphasis on the analysis of coordination will overarch this course and lead us to the current frontier of the research on financial crises. Topics treated: Causes and evolution of currency and banking crises, the mechanics of financial instruments and speculation, relation between financial crises and monetary and fiscal policy, agency problems and market failure, regulation of financial markets, international financial architecture. Special emphasis on theories of coordination and their application to the analysis of financial crises.
