Lernergebnisse

The course "Energy Entrepreneurship in Developing Countries" aims to teach students how the combination of entrepreneurship with sustainable and renewable energy technologies can have a positive impact on the development of low-income communities in the global South. The course provides a learning and exchange platform for students with business and/or technical knowledge and interest in understanding and starting energy-related businesses in the Global South and exploring the various thematic areas of energy access. The aim is to jointly promote exchange and discussion, generate new ideas, develop skills and learning tools to plan a viable business idea and improve the opportunities to access energy in the Global South. During the lecture, the participants will have the opportunity to develop their own business idea and to create a business plan. An alternative is to prepare a seminar paper with the methods learned on applied energy economics. After completing this course, students will be able to independently handle science- and business-related topics in the field of energy economics, especially energy access and environmental as well as sustainability policy. Based on the preparation and presentation of current case studies and publications, the students acquire presentation skills as well as the handling complex activities in the context of group work, discussions, generating business ideas and starting a new business.

Lehrinhalte

The lecture "Entrepreneurship" and "Energy in Developing Countries" offers a mixture of theoretically oriented lectures, guest speakers from the practice as well as practical (group) work, which aims at the development and evaluation of entrepreneurial basics and the elaboration of own potential entrepreneurial ventures or business ideas. The main topics and learning contents are • Understanding the relationship between energy access and economic development • Overview of the most important approaches to rural electrification and understanding of the "Energy Ladder” framework • Assessment of possible business ideas and entrepreneurial initiatives in the context of the development problems of the Global South • Insight into a multitude of practical examples of "Social Entrepreneurship" and Organizational Models: social entrepreneurship in the area of conflict between profit orientation, social impact, sustainability and innovation • Identification and consideration of specific local customer needs • Design of a business model and strategy • Building a successful team and implementing a business venture • Creating a start-up idea and business plan, with final presentation (Start-Up Pitch) • Seminar paper on relevant related topics to explore the learned methods according to a concrete case study

The portfolio examination consists of the following elements, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014).
