Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

In the course, students will read 2-3 papers on cloud systems per week and will participate in a weekly discussion session. Every participant will be responsible for moderating one discussion session (and one session as backup moderator).

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Students need to have existing knowledge on distributed systems concepts such as cloud computing, middleware, etc. which can be acquired from courses such as Cloud Computing, Continuous Software Engineering, Distributed Systems Prototyping, Enterprise Computing, or Fog Computing.

Mandatory requirements for the module test application:

This module has no requirements.

Test description (Module completion)

In this course, portfolio points are earned for three activities: - Moderator: Each student will be the moderator for one session (and the backup moderator for another session in case that the assigned moderator cannot attend the session). Students, here, earn points for the quality of their session moderation. If a student has to moderate a second session as a backup moderator, only the best of both sessions will be counted. - Participation: The student's participation in the weekly discussions (quantity and quality) is graded with up to 7 portfolio points per session. Depending on the semester, there will be 9-11 sessions - of these sessions, the best 9 will be counted. Sessions in which a student has to step in as the backup moderator are graded with 7 portfolio points for participation. - Questions: After reading the weekly papers, all participants submit questions that they would like to discuss in the next session. These questions are given to the session moderator before the respective session. The set of all submitted questions (across all sessions) is graded at the end of the course. Students can earn up to 7 portfolio points. The second examination opportunity in semesters in which the course is offered is, for organizational reasons, offered as an oral exam replacing all portfolio examination parts. Grading scale: Students need at least 60 portfolio points to pass. After that, 3.5 portfolio points are needed per grading step, i.e., students need at least 91.5 portfolio points for a 1.0 grade.

Duration of the Module

The following number of semesters is estimated for taking and completing the module:
1 Semester.

This module may be commenced in the following semesters:
Winter- und Sommersemester.

Maximum Number of Participants

The maximum capacity of students is 10.

Registration Procedures

This course requires a separate registration and participant selection procedure based on AllgStuPO §48(2) as the course (i) has only a limited number of slots and (ii) requires a certain knowledge state and skill level. Students must fulfill the requirements listed above under "Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses". Usually, this will be checked based on a short ISIS questionnaire in the first week of the teaching period. All details will be announced in the respective ISIS course and in the kick-off session. The link to the ISIS course will usually be posted on the MCC website before the start of the teaching period. The course may be offered as an online course using Zoom (will be communicated on ISIS). In that case, participating students need to have a stable Internet connection (or be on Campus) and be prepared to switch on their camera. Without video connection, the discussion-based course format is not possible.
