Learning Outcomes

The students: - possess a profound understanding of biological conversion processes and substance cycles - know the essential process technologies for organic waste treatment and waste disposal, and their subsequent impact on eco-systems and landscape - possess the ability to review and evaluate and new and emerging technologies. - can develop concepts and dimensions of waste treatment facilities. - possess the ability to assess legal and scientific documents in the context of organic waste, biowaste treatment and the utilization of treatment products to identify process, product and emission requirements and their consequences on waste treatment facilities. The course is divided into: 30 % Knowledge & Understanding 30 % Development & Design 20 % Research & Evaluation 20 % Implementation & Practice

Content

- Quantification and characterization of organic waste, biological and geochemical conversion processes - Process technologies for composting and anaerobic digestion facilities, as well as landfills and mechanical-biological-treatment plants - Design and dimensioning of composting and biogas plants or landfills-emission prevention by leachate and exhaust air treatment biological treatment plants - Final storage criteria for landfill management - Prognosis and utilization of landfill and biogas - Measurement of greenhouse gas emissions from biological treatment plants, determination of depositing properties - Remediation and decommissioning of landfills

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The module consists of an integrated course and exercise course and excursion. The integrated course incorporates essential technical concepts and principles of organic waste treatment and waste disposal. The concepts are accompanied by analysis of legal documents, statistical databases and scientific publications. As part of the integrated course, there are opportinities to discuss current issues and topics. An excursion to a waste treatment facility and demonstration of measurement of relevant waste parameters will facilitate insights in waste treatment plants, and the analytical methods in biowaste treatment. The exercise course supports and illustrates the concepts with practical examples and facilitates tools for dimensioning of waste treatment facilities. The integrated and the exercises course require independent work of the students, which will strengthen their system understanding and methodological competence. Also, the ISIS platform is used as a presentation and information medium.
