In this course, the bio-physical and technological basics of Brain-Computer Interfacing using Electroencephalography (EEG) will be elaborated. It covers the path from the (electrical) activity of single neurons via the volume conduction of the human head, the ensemble activity of neurons and the instrumentation to the computer.

Every single session will give a basic introduction to the different topics and the exercise will consist of programming and/or analytic tasks to elaborate these topics. The progress of the course with regard to content will start on a single neuron level and move step by step forward towards the signals we obtain using Electroencephalography (EEG). The theoretical background is focused but not limited to EEG , as one of the main methods for Brain-Computer-Interfacing.

This includes:

  • simple single neuron models
  • the generated electrical fields
  • (simple) neural networks and ensemble activity of neurons
  • the effects of volume conduction in the head
  • (realistic) electrical models of human heads and their extraction from Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs)
  • source reconstruction from EEG

Basic skills in programming and linear algebra are necessary. Basic knowledge in electrostatics are of advantage but not obligatory.

We will first meet in TC 010 and then might switch to MAR 4.044 depending on the number of participants and pandemic rules etc.
