The seminar will explore the role of conservation-restoration history in Western Europe in the field of painting and sculpture. The objective of the seminar is to illustrate the historical evolution of methods, techniques, professionality, and standards of conservation-restoration up to the modern times. The seminar will concentrate on the shift of paradigm from early modern restoration practices – deeply intertwined with artistic practices – to the modern science-based techniques of conservation and analysis.

The technical procedures will therefore be presented as part of different cultural frameworks, hand in hand with the evolution of art history as a discipline. Particular attention will be devoted to the political role of conservation and heritage protection, in close connection to museum history and the art market, with case-studies from both Berlin and international collections. This perspective will allow to encompass not only the practice, but also the discourse surrounding conservation. At last, the seminar will address the latest development of modern conservation practices, including new techniques of digital recording and facsimile production (challenging our notion of authenticity), the impact of modern tourism and exhibition industry on conservation, and the role of conservation in the debate about museum policy today.
