In this course we will explore the topic of scientific explanation from a philosophical point of view. While the idea that science not only describes, but explains phenomena has become commonplace, how exactly science explains and under what conditions is disputed. We will discuss the most influential theories of scientific explanation, including the covering-law theory, the causal-mechanistic theory and unificationism. We will furthermore look into the purpose of scientific explanation, the role of abstraction and idealisation as well as the question whether scientific explanation works the same way in all sciences, or whether special sciences, such as psychology and cognitive sciences have different standards
