This course will focus on four major themes that are imperative for future business leaders in understanding today’s China, making strategic decisions, i.e. 1) China’s macro-economy context in particular in the aftermath of the Convid-19 pandemic; 2) Transformation of competitive strategies of multinationals (MNCs) in China; 3) Context and particularities of innovation management in China; and 4) Characteristics and challenges of Chinese entrepreneurship and Chinese startups.

•       The course will first explain why the ‘Socialism with Chinese Characteristics’ is able to create 10% GDP growth over three decades and how a ‘5-Year-Plan’ can contribute to an increasingly market-driven economy. To what extent is this ‘success model’ sustainable in the long run considering challenges in society, economy, ecological environment and politics? What road blocks Chinese economy has to overcome in the short and mid-term especially in light of the post-Convid-19 world economy?

•       Based on this understanding, the course will then depict the transformation of strategies of multinationals in China and their current challenges. In particular mid-market strategy and business model innovation in China will be discussed more in depth.

•       Thirdly, context and particularities of innovation management in China will be elaborated. At macro level the course will review strength and weaknesses of the Chinese innovation ecosystem, and at micro level the course will look at how do Chinese companies innovate?

•       Fourthly, Chinese entrepreneurism will be studied by looking at different breeds of Chinese entrepreneurism including both traditional family businesses as well as world-class tech startups. However, according to Goldman Sachs, shares of US-listed Chinese tech firms had lost USD 1 trillion (CNY 6.46 trillion) in value between Feb. and mid-July 2021. A series of regulatory actions of the Chinese government related to anti-trust, data security, labor treatment and restrictions for private tutoring have been triggers of the drastic stock plunge. What have made Chinese tech companies successful and what kind of challenges they are facing?
