Kursbeschreibung:

This course equips students of media studies with essential skills for research and academic writing, preparing them for writing their master’s theses. Throughout the semester, students will apply these skills to a research topic of their choice, reflecting their personal interests and academic curiosity, culminating in a final paper. Students will learn to

-       develop their own research questions and hypotheses

-       identify, evaluate, and critically engage with relevant sources and theories

-       Identify, outline and write key sections of an academic paper, including introduction, literature review, methods, results, and discussion.

-       Describe and critically engage with qualitative and quantitative research methods

-       Apply academic standards and citation guidelines (APA)

-       Develop academic writing skills. Write in a style that is objective, clear and precise.

-       Reflect on research ethics and biases, and practice responsible research conduct.

The seminar will be held in English, however, with a bilingual and integrative approach. The students will be allowed to ask questions, comment in class, complete activities, and write their paper in German, if they prefer to do so.

The seminar will be held in person, with optional online assignments. Required literature and further material will be accessible on ISIS. Most weeks, students have the option to complete assignments that work towards the goal of the final paper. The assignments can be completed in class and uploaded to ISIS, allowing students to receive feedback from the instructor and fellow students.
