Kursbeschreibung:

This course discusses the social impact of new communication technologies. It is designed to examine the current and potential effects of widespread use of those new technologies on the individual and our society. We will discuss technologies such as the internet (incl. websites, social network sites, wikis, online dating sites), smartphone use, video games, and other forms of computer-mediated communication. The learning goals of the class are:

• To understand the historical origins of the study of communication technologies

• To apply communication concepts and theories to study new media technologies

• To understand the effects of those technologies on the individual and society

• To develop strategies for using and managing media technologies in our daily lives

• To provide you with skills to analyze and critically reflect upon media technologies and their messages

Class material and readings posted on ISIS will be in German or English. Some of the class assignments can be completed in both languages.
