In this course, we will explore one of the most significant geopolitical developments of our time: China’s pursuit to become a global leader in technology and innovation. From AI to telecommunications, biotechnology to green energy, China is rapidly advancing its technological capabilities, reshaping global industries and influencing political, economic, and social systems worldwide. There is no doubt that this rise has led to a remarkable change in China's global ambition and its role in the international community. In order to fully assess China's role in the further development of international relations, it is essential to examine not only the economic factors but also the fundamental self-image of the Chinese towards the world and China's view of other countries in a historical, cultural and geopolitical context. This course provides students with a knowledge base about the historical and cultural background of how China's role in the world has developed over the course of its long and varied history. The course aims also to give students a comprehensive understanding of the factors driving China’s ascent in technology and innovation development and their implications for future global economic and political landscapes.
