Body Space: mapping socio-spatial narratives in tenants’ housing actions

A project-course (as part of the X-Student Research Groups) at the Center for Interdisciplinary Women’s and Gender Studies, Technische Universität Berlin

Description:

How can we narrate the stories of tenant housing actions beyond words? In our co-research group, we will engage with visual qualitative research methods to evoke and document the embodied experiences of tenants involved in housing actions in Berlin. Through discussions, reflections, and exercises in drawing and mapping, we will explore: How do body-space asymmetries shape organized housing spaces? How can we visually narrate, for instance, migrant tenants’ stories? What are the possibilities and limitations of visual methods when analyzing spaces of contestation? The final output will be an open discussion reflecting the group's findings, fostering dialogue, and expanding the debate on the right to the city and housing through an intersectional and visual lens. The course is open to students from various fields—architecture, urban studies, sociology—with no prior knowledge required. Students with migration backgrounds are particularly encouraged to participate.
