New Directions in Globalization Theory ‐ From Globalization to Planetary Sociology (Sepcialisation in Societal Analysis, Modul Vertiefung Gesellschaftsanalyse 3LP)

Di 16-18:00

Room MAR 0013, (except 16.04. in MAR 0017)

One concept that seems to be almost ubiquitously referred to but whose terminology is hardly clearly defined is that of the "global". Despite the many sociological contributions to globalisation theory, the notion of the global in sociology is still a constant work in progress. In light of the critical reflection of the universalism of classical theories of modernity in sociology as well as current discussions about a truly global postcolonial sociology ("global sociology"), the question arises as to what constitutes globalized processes and how globality can be defined sociologically. The theories of reflexive modernisation, which have been influential for sociological globalisation research, have undergone multiple expansions and theoretical critiques. Dominant globalisation paradigms are further challenged through empirical observations of intensified geopolitical conflicts, the resurgence of borders, but also transboundary challenges and increasing interdependencies, e.g. with regard to global climate and sustainability.

In the seminar, we will explore newer perspectives on the global and globalisation processes and discuss the extent to which competing or alternative sociological concepts of the world can be identified, as well as the analytical potentials, limitations and challenges of these approaches.
