Over the last years Anti-European movements and parties have been quite successful in mobilizing popular support and gaining political influence in national parliaments and even governments. Anti-Europeanism comes in variations and ranges from calls to radical reforms of the European Union to its outright abolition. At a graduate student conference to be held together with our cooperation partner, the Scuola Superiore di Sant'Anna in Pisa, in Brussels from 8 to 12 July 2024 we will investigate, discuss, and present a) the ideological-political "battle-fields" of Anti-European agitation; b) the establishment of European networks of Anti-European movements; c) the dynamic interaction between national public spheres and European politics; d) the direct impact of Anti-European agitation and politics on the European level. Students will receive an extensive seminar reader. As part of the week in Brussels we'll also have the opportunity to meet and exchange with high-level European experts and politicians. The programm will be complemented by excursions to the European Parliament and the House of European History. While the ZfA will cover most of the cost (travel, accommodation, and partly board), participating students are asked for a contribution of a maximum of 100 Euro.

Interested students have to apply for the workshop no later than 28 March 2024. For more details, please, see the ZfA website for the Call for applications. The course is limited to ten students. The conference language is English.

Before the conference we'll get together for preparatory meetings on 19 April 2024 and two more dates (tba) for an exchange with fellow students in Pisa via Zoom.
