In der modernen Gesellschaft sind Organisationen nicht mehr Instrumente in den Händen externer Autoritäten, wie beispielsweise Bürokratien, sondern sie definieren sich über ihre Handlungsträgerschaft. Sie werden zu organisationalen Akteuren, die sich selbst Ziele setzen und die Mittel bestimmen, um diese Ziele zu erreichen. Zugleich müssen sie, um als legitime Organisationen zu gelten, gesellschaftliche Erwartungen erfüllen. Immer mehr gesellschaftliche Bereiche werden nach diesem Modell formaler Organisation umgestaltet. Im Seminar wird erstens unter Rückgriff auf Arbeiten des soziologischen Neoinstitutionalismus dieser Prozess einer zunehmenden Rationalisierung der Gesellschaft theoretisch erschlossen. Zweitens wird empirisch am Beispiel der Universität herausgearbeitet, welche Konsequenzen sich aus der Übernahme organisationaler Handlungsträgerschaft ergeben. Universitäten als Organisationen müssen sich gegenüber gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen u.a. an die Beschäftigungsfähigkeit ihrer Absolvent:innen, die Internationalisierung von Forschung und Lehre, den Transfer ihrer Forschungsergebnisse oder die Diversität von Wissenschaftler:innen und Studierenden verhalten. Die Teilnehmer:innen sind eingeladen, diese Liste mit eigenen Themen zu erweitern.

In modern society, organizations are no longer instruments at the disposal of external authorities but define themselves through their capability of action. They become organizational actors who set their own goals and decide about the means to achieve them. At the same time, they have to cater to social expectations in order to be recognized as legitimate organizations. Ever more parts of society are reshaped by this model of formal organization. The seminar, first, discusses this process theoretically with reference to the works of sociological neoinstitutionalism. Taking the university as an example, second, consequences of assuming organizational actorhood will be carved out empirically. As organizations, universities have to position themselves vis-à-vis social demands that amongst others relate to the employability of their graduates, the internationalization of research and teaching, the transfer of their research findings, or the diversity of their academic staff and students. Participants are welcome to extend this list with their own topics.
