READING CLUB - BEC Basic Module – Reflection and Responsibility

Martina Vortel, Juliane Rettschlag, SHK: Aleksandrs Koselev

Our society is entangled with science and technology in highly complex and dynamic ways. Therefore, the challenges we face such as the climate and energy crisis or the digitalisation of health care are not simply problems of feasibility, but rather raise fundamental ethical and epistemological questions: How can we ensure that new technologies do not reproduce opressive power structures? What are our values and visions for responsible futures? Who needs to cooperate to ensure that scientific developments are in line with moral values?

The Basic Module – Reflection and Responsibility of the Berlin Ethics Certificate (BEC) lays the foundations for addressing ethical issues and provides an introduction to current topics and case studies that can be explored in greater depth in further modules of the BEC. Relevant basic concepts and methods at the intersections of (applied) ethics, science and technology reflection, and inter/transdisciplinarity are taught. In a multidisciplinary exchange, students reflect on different knowledge cultures  ̶ including those of their own field of study. Students are invited to contribute their own topics and interests. The basic module is a compulsory course for all participants of the Berlin Ethics Certificate. Further information will be announced on Isis.

Please pay attention: This series of appointments is part of the BEC Basic Module - Reflection and Responsibility. If you want to participate in the course, you must also attend the workshops.
