MATH+ Student Research Group: Nowhere-zero flows

In this research project we are investigating the graph-theoretic problem concerning the existence of nowhere-zero flows in certain classes of graphs. A nowhere-zero flow on a graph is an assignment of non-zero values to the edges, such that they fulfill a conservation condition. The study of nowhere-zero flows was introduced by Tutte in the 1950’s with efforts to generalize the famous Four Colour Theorem of planar graphs, and numerous other connections to notable mathematical objects had been found since. Our aim is to conduct research on various open problems regarding nowhere-zero flows utilizing methods from different branches of mathematics (notably stochastics, Erhart theory and algebraic combinatorics). This research group is directed towards both Phase I and Phase II students who are interested in doing active collaborative research. Some prior knowledge of graph theory/discrete mathematics is recommended, but we encourage involvement from students with focus on other fields. This project is part of the MATH+ Student Research Groups program.

The first session in the week 17.10-21.10 will be used to discuss when and where to hold our regular seminar meetings and discuss specifics.

This student research group is led by Robin Chemnitz and Ádám Schweitzer.
