Art exhibitions are a regular and customary feature in today’s cultural life. From great blockbuster to touring exhibitions through small independent productions, art exhibitions thrive in museums, galleries, cultural sites, incessantly fuelling our tourism and leisure industry. This seminar will address the historical evolution and present reality of art exhibitions in the European context. Focusing on European art, we will consider different exhibition formats (such as monographic, anthologic, online) through visual and textual sources. The aim of the seminar is, on the one hand, to acquire the critical tools to analyse the – sometimes hidden – vocabulary of an art exhibition, as well as an awareness of its historical evolution. On the other hand, we will address the problematic issues and controversies related to the exhibition system from its inception in the XIX century to the present day.
NOTE: The temporary programme includes the presence of external speakers for single thematic sessions and a visit to an ongoing exhibition in Berlin.
