Learning Outcomes

• Ability to synthesize conceptual approaches on a pre-defined topic at the intersection of gender, innovation and digitalisation and prepare for presentation and debate • Gaining competences in performing a thorough literature search and analysis and identifying relevant scientific papers for understanding and developing this specific research subject • Ability to generate and discuss new research perspectives based on a systematic analysis of published previous research on gender and innovation • Develop arguments and solutions based on group discussion and debate • Overall, deepening the knowledge about the relevant body of literature on gender and innovation and building upon it. • Understand the management implications for innovation management, including challenges and opportunities for recognising the issue of gender in innovation.

Content

The seminar aims at introducing students to an overall understanding of gender and innovation and to build upon the existing research in this space. Innovation crosses gender in at least two ways: first, in how people understand who is acknowledged as an innovator and second, in what is understood as innovation. However, innovation research is largely gender blind, which means people in innovation are invisible. Still, the dominating image of innovation and innovators builds on stereotypical notions of gender, promoting men and certain forms of masculinity as the norm. At the same time, the business case for gender diversity argues that women lead differently and more effectively than men. In particular, female representation has been linked to higher creativity and innovation. There is a view that women bring a different and complementary range of experience and angles, and that digital innovation offers exciting opportunities for gender equality. But on the flipside, a range of concerns exist when it comes to gender and digital disruption: technology innovation might amplify and perpetuate gender stereotypes and augment gender segregation. Such discourses can maintain, challenge or reverse gender inequalities in business. Gendered meanings about people in the innovation process are rhetorically created and reinforced. This research seminar takes participants on a reflective journey about some of the big narratives and questions at the intersection of gender at work, innovation, and digitalisation, such as: • What is the evidence-base for gender-stereotypical sex difference claims in ability and preference? • Does the problem of and the solution to gender inequality stem from women’s personal choices, their attitudes and (poor) self-confidence, or their different understanding of power? • Is erotic capital something women can use to their advantage at work and in the innovation process? • Do quotas help or hinder? • Does the business case for women stack up - and do women really foster innovation? • Are notions of female innovation advantage or “feminine innovations” helpful in creating a more level playing field? • Is digital disruption going to be the great divider or equalizer? • What is the impact of contemporary discourses on women’s lived realities and imagined futures? The course will draw on multidisciplinary theoretical streams and disciplines (e.g. from psychology, biology, sociology, philosophy and economics), exploring extant scholarly and popular (science).
