Learning Outcomes

The module “Sustainable Entrepreneurship” aims to provide the students with an overview of the scholarly domain “sustainable entrepreneurship” and its diverse themes. There is scientific consensus that humanity is finding itself at a crossroad on what ecological legacy it wants to leave for future generations. The course will explore various social and ecological issues that are perpetrated by the current system of exploitation for economic gain. Key elements of the economic system are in dire need of transformation to preserve our natural world while developing social equality for all humans. The role of sustainable entrepreneurship is viewed as a pivotal catalytic mechanism in achieving transformation and creating non-economic, both social and ecological, gains through means of building successful businesses. By means of diverse lecturing content and at-home preparation material, the student will gain a robust understanding of relevant and current research themes around sustainable entrepreneurship and how it differentiates itself from purely economic focused entrepreneurship. The student will become familiar with the various motivations behind sustainable entrepreneurial activity, business approaches, and ecosystems supporting sustainable entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the student will be able to critically reflect on the role of sustainable entrepreneurship in addressing pressing societal issues and its contribution to developing and preserving a socially, ecologically, and economically just future. The students will be able to demonstrate their ability to solve relevant research questions with the knowledge gained from the lectures.

Content

The Student will be introduced to the "flourishing business model canvas" (by Antony Upward). The components of the canvas will be broadly discussed throughout the duration of the module. Familiarization with grand societal challenges and entrepreneurial approaches to them. Students will work in teams during lecture time to analyze existing sustainable business models and understand how they are aiming to solve problems while delivering social and ecological value. Other sustainability related issues will be discussed in class. Team work, open group discussions and utilization of the business model canvas foster sustainable entrepreneurial competencies such as cooperation, individual reflexivity and initial strategic and systems thinking.
