Learning Outcomes

The objective of this module is to instruct students in approaches of industry analysis and current problems of top management of corporations. The students shall learn how to handle these instruments themselves and how they can learn from this analysis for their future work career. With the support of industry experts, the students are taught to present professional case studies and how to stand their ground in an English discussion. Furthermore, the students should learn how to derive solutions for strategic problems, and thus how to manage the challenges with which modern management has to deal.

Content

Part 1: "Strategic Management and Organisational Change“ Prof. Dr. Dodo zu Knyphausen-Aufseß introduces to the basic concepts of strategic management. Based on the different schools of thought of strategic management, aspects of corporate strategy (diversification, role of corporate headquarters) and business strategies (industry analysis and evolution) are discussed. The course content is constantly adapted to current developments. Discussions with experts from business and consulting practice help to deepen the content and to test the academic approaches. Part 2: “Business Ecosystems” The course addresses the emerging topic of business ecosystems and digital platforms. The lecturer, Prof. Dr Ulrich Pidun, is partner and director at Boston Consulting Group and fellow at the BCG Henderson Institute (BCG’s think tank). He has researched business ecosystems over the last four years and published more than 20 papers and a book on the topic. The course covers the theoretical foundations and frameworks for understanding business ecosystems; practical approaches for designing, managing and competing with business ecosystems; and required capabilities, success factors, typical failure modes and how to avoid them. Teaching formats include lectures, student case study presentations, open discussions and an interactive business ecosystem game.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

This is an integrated course consisting of lectures as well as practical parts (guest presentations from practicioners, workshops). Through discussing relevant topics participants are introduced to reading scientific texts.

Previous participation in our bachelor module „Grundlagen des Strategischen und Internationalen Managements“ or comparable courses.

Test description (Module completion)

The portfolio examination consists of the elements listed, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014).
