Learning Outcomes

The aim of the lecture is to enable students to understand, analyze and evaluate heath care systems in different contexts. Students will develop the following competencies and social skills: - ability to describe and compare different health care systems, - capability to describe and analyze the development of health care systems - work in a multi-cultural environment and team

Content

Health care systems are complex and usually not well understood. This course provides a structured introduction into how health care systems are organized, financed and regulated. Units will provide a general introduction into the framework and functions of health care systems, into coverage (of persons and benefits), into resource mobilization, pooling and allocation to third-party payers, purchasing and third party payer-provider relationships, regulation of health care providers as well as questions regarding the public-private mix. Well-known types of health care systems ("Bismarck", NHS etc.) will be presented and discussed.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

Lectures with visualization and discussion are carried out during seminars at the department, including a 2h workshop on how to find information and data for individual study. Students are encouraged to exchange insights and opinions with the lecturer(s) and in the group. For the duration of the course, students are expected to ask questions on presented information, think along when questions are posed by the lecturers and share their own knowledge and opinions with the group ("active oral participation").

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Participants should have a prior knowledge of health care and are expected to read and discuss the course material which will be made available after the first lecture.

Test description (Module completion)

The portfolio examination consists of the following elements, adding up to a maximum of 100 credits. The grading follows the joint conversion key of the School of Economics and Management (decision of the school's council dated May 28, 2014 - FKR VII-4/8-28.05.2014).
