Lernergebnisse

This module will enable students to: - understand the challenges of global environmental governance, - understand the role of non-state actors in global environmental politics, - identify criteria and challenges of democratic governance in global environmental politics - identify governance challenges in environmental politics with regard to future planning and anticipation - identify current research gaps and formulate approaches to address them - understand and classify the diverse scientific approaches to studying environmental governance, including their range of theories and methodologies, and their relevance for the planning practice, and - independently apply scientific approaches to diverse, partly new and emerging problems of global environmental governance and critically engage with problem of global environmental governance In this module, students gain expertise (40%), method skills (40%) and system skills (10%) and social skills (10%).

Lehrinhalte

The course explores the field of global environmental governance from a political scientist perspective. The focus is on challenges and opportunities of democratic governance and the role of non-state actors in global environmental governance. In the context of climate policy and the sustainable development goals (SDGs), we analyze environmental governance arrangements and non-state actors‘ role in democratizing international negotiations. Furthermore, we investigate the specific future-orientation of global environmental governance, for example in the SDGs and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Content-wise, the first course concentrates on supra- and international politics, and the second course on transnational non-state governance. Thereby, we deal with power shifts between public and private actors, North-South asymmetries and evidence of ethical power in international relations. We build a bridge between theory and practice. Theoretically, we are concerned with power and democracy. Empirical foci are climate and energy governance in addition to biodiversity and forest governance. Many illustrative examples will enable us to consolidate our knowledge.
