Lernergebnisse

During this course, the students will acquire knowledge about the latest advances on digitalisation at the level of cities, the so called "smart cities". Topics will include applications of open data, digital metering, sensors and IoT technologies, asset management and green-blue infrastructures. The technical content on digital sensors, data management and modelling will be coupled with content introducing the ‘bigger picture’, explaining urban ecosystems and interconnected critical urban infrastructure (e.g., water networks, electricity grid, sensor networks), with theory, methods, and applications. The students will learn about the state-of-the-art developments and challenges related to smart cities both in the fields of research and practice. They will approach the practical implementation of solutions to currently relevant problems in the field of digitalisation of critical urban infrastructure. They will learn how to concisely pitch a project idea and proposed solutions to complex technical and social challenges.

Lehrinhalte

The block course “Smart Cities” deals with the area of digitalisation at the urban scale and the network of connected urban critical infrastructures. Moreover, its main goal is to explore the topic from different perspectives, thus equip students with a multidisciplinary approach and set of skills. In this course, the phenomenon of digitalization of urban critical infrastructure will be analysed, with a particular focus on the urban scale. This course extends, at a larger scale, the content learnt during the course "Smart Sensing" and “Smart Buildings”. During the "hackathon" activity, the students will be actively fostered to develop own solutions to relevant problems related to the course content. Assessment includes a final presentation of the solution developed in teams to the hackathon challenges. The lectures will be given in English.
