Lernergebnisse

The goal of the course "Land Use. Impacts. Responses." is to enable students • to become familiar with direct and indirect drivers of land use sectors on a global, national and regional/local scale, • to identify critical stressors to environmental resources and social implications of different land uses, • to recognize the proper methods needed to assess the impact of land use sectors on the environment and society, • to gain expertise about the reach and coverage of environmental planning and assessment and their use in managing environmental and social implications, • to identify the proper starting points in adressing impacts of land use change on the policy, plan, program and project level, • to adress research approaches in the further development of environmental planning and assessment This course offers predominantly: Professional expertise 40%, Methodological expertise 25%, Systems thinking 25%, Social competence 10%.

Lehrinhalte

The course "Land Use. Impacts. Responses." provides an overview of different land use sectors, their drivers and environmental impacts, as well as methods and instruments used for impact management. The sectors discussed in class can include, for example, the mining industry, forestry, agriculture, fossil and renewable energies, urbanization and the water (e.g. supply, dams, reservoirs, etc.) and transport sectors. The DPSIR (Drivers, Pressure, State, Impact, Response) indicator model, initially introduced by the OECD, serves as a framework for the exploration of these sectors on a global, national and regional/local scale: The driving forces of the land use sectors, such as relevant private and public actors and policies, will be discussed. Various pressure indicators, that is affected environmental resources (e.g. erosion, eutrification) and social implications (e.g. resettlement, noise) will be identified. The current state and the vulnerability of affected resources will be scrutinized next. Students will study symptoms of environmental and social impacts, and explore relevant methods and assess their significance. Such methods include, amongst others, life-cycle assessments, models, multi-criteria analyses, and the scope and relevance of environmental objectives and thresholds. The course then adresses responses to environmental and social impacts of land use sectors on policy, plan, program and project levels. The potential of environmental planning and assessment, of adaptation strategies, collaborative approaches and trading models to contribute to a sustainable land management also constitute a major learning outcome, and will be discussed critically.

Beschreibung der Lehr- und Lernformen

The integrated course "Land Use. Impacts. Responses." consists of lectures on the one hand, providing an overview of the drivers, pressures, state, impact and response to policies, plans, programms and projects causing changes in land use. On the other hand, the classes will be completed by student presentations on specific DPSIR issues to be selected based on student interests. National as well as international examples will be presented. Students are asked to base their work on literature research and case studies, provide a presentation in class, take part in discussions and hand in a written assignment until the end of the semester. The course is held in English. If all participants prefer the courses to be held in German this can be arranged. Some case studies and literature will still be in English.
