Learning Outcomes

The design of a civil system needs to satisfy a number of technical conditions, but also needs to optimzie the use of economic and environmental resources over the system's lifetime. This module will teach methods for designing large-scale civil systems under consideration of their life-cycle resource usage. To this end, it will focus on a combination of mathematical-analytical techniques with methods for engineering cost, risk, and multi-criteria comparision. Further, the module will teach methods of how to use historical and simulation data in relation to these methods. Finally, an important focus is the exploration how these techniques and methods can be meaningfully applied within interdisciplinary teams and within setting of collective decision making. To ground the theoretical part of the module, students will gain practical hands on experiences modelling complex civil systems with the discussed techniques and methods using a rich practical case study project.
