Lernergebnisse

The students will have extended basic knowledge of architecture theory and will be able to understand comprehensive problems and develop architecture-critical relationships. The acquisition of competence in communicative and argumentative working methods is an integral part of the course. The module deepens individual, specific subject areas of architecture criticism, enabling students to independently apply the acquired knowledge in architecture criticism and mediation in other subject areas. The module imparts the knowledge and techniques for independent, scientific work. The contents of the module will be dealt with under gender considerations. Students will have advanced knowledge of architecture criticism based on exemplary representations of individual positions. Skills include the ability to extrapolate knowledge to other questions and problems. Basic knowledge and the skills upon which the students can build further and deepen their knowledge will be imparted. Skills also include journalist-level writing, the development of an independent architecture critique, and the defence of theses in public debates and discussion formats. This knowledge will enable a deeper critical reflection on architecture. The acquired competence will enable the students to critically question and present their own findings orally. Social responsibility is just as much a part of the acquired competences as is empathy in various problem areas. Professional skills 40%, methodological skills 40%, social skills 20%

Lehrinhalte

The module Architecture Theory/Criticism deals with the reflection of concrete architecture at the interface between expert knowledge and public opinion, as it is conveyed in the feuilleton of daily newspapers and in architecture magazines. Teaching is based on written and pictorial works on concrete architectures, their authors, and documents of their reception in specialist journals and feuilletons. An important didactic element is the viewing and description of architectural objects and urban situations on site. The readings and in-depth discussions provide insight into the link between theory and practice, as well as between reception and mediation in the public, which is indispensable for dealing with architecture in modern, pluralist societies. The teaching content includes creative writing in its various formats as criticism, review, glossary, editorial. The focus is on critical reflection on built works or architectural designs. The focus of the teaching is to recognize the specifics of the individual building or the individual architectural situation, to elaborate on its characteristics linguistically, and to formulate it in vivid images. The teaching content is based on the technique of ekphrasis, the transfer of pictorial experience into the terminology of language.
