Lernergebnisse

Students are able to evaluate and assess planning approaches and processes in a critical and reflected manner taking into account their embeddedness in socio-spatial and political-institutional settings and development dynamics. They have knowledge of developments in the socio-spatial and political-institutional contexts of urban and regional planning, of topics and directions in critical urban and planning research in interdisciplinary perspective, as well as of approaches and methods of policy analysis, especially of their application to urban and regional research. Furthermore, they have the skills to analyse and interpret planning approaches and processes from a socio-political perspective and to apply approaches and methods of policy analysis in urban and regional research.

Lehrinhalte

The module Planning Theory consists of contributions to a critical and reflective understanding of planning from a primarily socio-political perspective. It pursues an interdisciplinary approach that is meant to promote a fruitful exchange between urban and regional planning and urban and regional research, and in particular between planning theory and critical approaches to urban-regional and socio-spatial research, such as urban sociology, economic and political geography, political economy, as well as policy and governance research. The topics of the seminar in the summer term are regularly updated with regard to current debates in planning theory and in urban and regional research. They deal with politico-economic and institutional conditions, with socio-political (power) relations and with spatial contexts of planning, with an emphasis on the role of planning practises and discourses in the strategical-relational construction of socio-spatial settings.

Beschreibung der Lehr- und Lernformen

The module Planning Theory consists of two courses: - Planning Theory 1 (lecture, winter term) introduces to debates and contributions to understanding planning as a political process and to defining and positioning the planning profession with regard to its social role and political responsibility, as developed in plannijngbtheory in recent decades; - Planning Theory 2 (seminar, summer term) is devoted to an in-depth engagement with topics of current relevance for planning theory and practice in connection with the political dimension discussed in the first part of the module. In the event of the number of participants exceeding the seminar norm (>30 students) two seminars are conducted dealing with two different topics, offering the possibility for students to choose the seminar/topic of their interest (max. 30 students per seminar). A term-specific title highlights the topic chosen for each seminar and is announced before the start of the summer term. Overall, the teaching forms include: - thematic inputs/lectures, - colloquia and forums devoted to discussing inputs by the students, - thematic seminars devoted to student presentations and discussions on selected issues or cases related to the seminar topic.
