Lernergebnisse

With the successful completion of the module students aquire Knowledge - of current research topics of philosophy in technology and design theory - of journal types and the composition of journal articles Skills - how to interpret research literature - how to compose journal articles - how to structure and write an extended abstract (e. g. for a conference or journal call) - how to analyse, reconstruct, discuss, develop further and present arguments in the field of philosophy of technology and design theory Competences - how effectively deal with research literature - how to reflect critically current topics in the philosophy of technology and design theory

Lehrinhalte

AI is "sold" to us as THE future. Yet, more and more problematic cases related to the use of this technology make the headlines. Tech visionaries often (naively?) argue that our societies will overcome this with the construction of unbiased AI. However, these algorithms rely on biases. They sort out and cluster objects, as well as humans, based on their different characteristics or features. By this own functioning, AI reproduces and systematises social prejudices. Nevertheless, feminist, gender, queer, BIPOC, post-colonialist and disabilities studies, have since long ago analysed what is more than mere biases but reveal deep-rooted power structures. We see technology here as only a proxy to access deeper political issues. How can we make use of this work to uncover this new role of technology? How this latter has enforced the so-called "matrix of domination"? How can these analyses enable us to go beyond these somewhat naive promises of purely technological solutions, and to rather shape novel socio-technical visions? From the cybernetics dreams of Donna Haraway to the latest standpoints from Data Feminism of Catherine D’Ignazio and Lauren Klein, we will go through texts and references that can help us to make AI, not our future, but rather a collective tool to question what is to be human and imagine intersectional futures. This seminar is a philosophy one but aims at adopting an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, resources from other humanities may be studied. No previous knowledge in any of these disciplines or technology is required, only an interest for them. Please, do not hesitate to reach me out if you have questions regarding this offer.
