Lernergebnisse

Almost every decision and action is taken under risk and/or uncertainty. This module will enable students to differentiate, analyze and model different types of risk and uncertainty. Skills and Knowledge: Students will acquire basic knowledge and skills to differentiate existing probability and uncertainty concepts, understand their historical foundations and underlying assumptions about human nature. Students will further be able to evaluate the implications of these concepts for psychological models of decision making, risk perception and communication in both theory and application. Competences and Applications: Students will be able to model risk and uncertainty in different work domains and, based on this, to derive and critically assess interventions aimed at improving informed decision making under risk and uncertainty. In particular, students will be able to: - apply principles of transparent risk communication. - model binary decision situations as a way to develop and evaluate work-related decision support interventions.

Lehrinhalte

- Existing definitions of risk versus uncertainty and different probability concepts - History of existing probability concepts - Assumptions of human nature (Homo oeconomicus vs. Homo heuristicus) - Models of decision making under risk and uncertainty - Analysis and design or decision processes and decision support - Principles of risk communication and perception - Intervention under risk and uncertainty (“nudging” vs. “boosting”)

Beschreibung der Lehr- und Lernformen

Basic knowledge and skills will be taught in an interactive classroom setting and may require preparatory reading at home. Concept, methods and applications taught in class will be discussed, critically evaluated and/or applied in small-group exercises. Students will report the results of practical exercises in short presentations.
