Lernergebnisse

This course enables students to define, shape, and solve a research problem drawn from the area of data management systems using scientific and technical methods within a fixed period of time. The module conveys: (a) technical competence 10%, (b) methodological competence 40%, (c) system competence 30%, and (d) social competence 20%.

Lehrinhalte

The course covers a presentation on open thesis topics at DIMA, as well as a presentation and discussion on the expectations and evaluation criteria of Master's Theses, topic selection, structuring and writing a thesis proposal, including problem statement, solution approach, experimental design, evaluation, and implementation plan as well as project and time management over the course of a Master's Thesis. Upon completion of their thesis, students will offer a presentation of their work (goal and research problem, solution methodology, evaluation and findings) and lessons learned with respect to the preparation and execution of their Master's Thesis for the discussion with their peers. Additionally, participating students will attend scheduled presentations and benefit both from the peers' comments on their work and from the discussion of the work of fellow students.

Beschreibung der Lehr- und Lernformen

This course consists of: (i) lectures on thesis topic selection, preparing a thesis proposal, and effective execution of a thesis, (ii) student lead presentations, and (iii) group discussions. Active participation and contributions to all parts of this course are essential.

Voraussetzungen für die Teilnahme / Prüfung

Wünschenswerte Voraussetzungen für die Teilnahme an den Lehrveranstaltungen:

Desired prerequisite knowledge and skills are as follows: (a) computer science topics addressed in TU Berlin modules in the Bachelor’s (e.g., ISDA / Information Systems and Data Analysis or the equivalent, DBPRA / Practical Database Systems Lab or the equivalent), (b) good programming skills in C, Java, and SQL, (c) Master's level coursework in database technology (DBT) and advanced information management (e.g., MDS, DMH), (d) strong English language skills, (e) undertaken concurrently when writing a Master's Thesis in data management systems in the Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group.

This module accompanies the topic definition and execution of a Master's thesis.

Prüfungsbeschreibung (Abschluss des Moduls)

This course is either pass or fail, it is not graded. To pass this course, students must prepare and defend a DIMA thesis proposal and deliver a final presentation upon completion of their thesis. Participating students will attend the final presentations of their peers.
