Learning Outcomes

Students have an overview of state-of-the-art cloud systems. Students have gained experience in reading scientific papers. Students are able to participate in and organize scientific discussions on cloud systems.

Content

The course covers state-of-the-art cloud systems based on scientific papers. The actual set of papers will vary over different semesters. Typical examples of such papers would be Dynamo, Google File System, BigTable, Cassandra, MapReduce, OpenWhisk, or SAND.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

In the course, students will read 2-3 papers on cloud systems per week and will participate in a weekly discussion session. Every participant will be responsible for moderating one discussion session.

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

Students need to have existing knowledge on distributed systems concepts such as cloud computing, middleware, etc. which can be acquired from courses such as Cloud Computing, Continuous Software Engineering, Distributed Systems Prototyping, Enterprise Computing, or Fog Computing.

Grading scale

At least 60 points in total needed to pass.

Test description (Module completion)

The course has only pass/fail grades. To determine these, up to 30 points can be earned by moderating a discussion session. The remaining 70 points are earned based on participation in the discussions. 60 points are needed to pass. The second examination opportunity in semesters in which the course is offered is, for organizational reasons, offered as an oral exam replacing both portfolio examination parts.

The maximum capacity of students is 10.

Registration Procedures

- Students interested in taking this course need to join the respective ISIS course (the link will be announced on the MCC website). All additional details will be communicated there. - The recommended knowledge above is in fact mandatory and will be checked either based on a short questionnaire or a short multiple choice quiz. - The course may be offered as an online course using Zoom (will be communicated on ISIS). In that case, participating students need to have a stable Internet connection (or be on Campus) and be prepared to switch on their camera. Without video connection, the discussion-based course format is not possible.
