Learning Outcomes

This course enables the students to: - explain the physico-chemical principles and the process engineering aspects in waste to energy processes, - understand the thermal waste treatment options, - suggest appropiate emission reductions techniques, - design thermal waste treatment systems based on practice-oriented calculations, - discuss about energy efficiency techniques in waste to energy process - get an overview of the implementation of waste treatment plants in the praxis. The course is divided into: 40 % Knowledge and Understanding 30 % Development and Desing 10 % Research and Evaluation 20 % Implementation and Praxis.

Content

- Thermal waste treatment status in waste management - Physico-chemical principles of thermal waste treatment - Process description and aggregates of thermal treatment - Flue gas cleaning, emissions reduction and residue treatment- legal framework and technical concepts. - Mass and Energy balances of the thermal process - Optimization of energy use generated from waste and biomass. - Production and use of substitute fuels

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The total module consists of an integrated course, which incorporates essential technical concepts and principles, and a calculation phase, which supports the contents of the theory and illustrates it with practical examples. The exercises to be solved require the independent work of the students, which will strength their system and methodological competence. As part of the integrated course, there will be a space to discuss current issues and topics. An excursion gives a good view of the praxis. Furthermore, information on current incidents related to waste, expert opinions and specialist articles are given. In addition, the ISIS platform is used as a presentation and information medium.
