Learning Outcomes

The participants know the basic methods and tools which are used routinely by scientists in all branches of biological science in order to find and correlate complex data from across disciplines (biology, chemistry and bioinformatics). They are also capable to understandhow the connectivity between different types of information is established. In addition, the participants are familiar with conceptual and practical tools for performing complex computational tasks in the field of biological chemistry. Thus, they undestand the general basis of mathematical algorithms in bioinformatics and are familiar with commonly used computational tools for sequence analysis, structure prediction, clustering and network analysis. By this, they have practical skills in bioinformatics including the use of biological databases, servers and software as well as basic handeling of structural data.

Content

The course will address the theoretical and practical aspects of the following topics: 1) gene structure and sequencing: string search, 2) computational techniques for sequence analysis: sequence alignment, BLAST alignment search tool and multiple sequence alignment, 3) transcription: mathematical algorithms for transcriptional profiling, 4) structural bioinformatics and drug discovery, 5) bioinformatics for proteomics and 6) protein-protein interaction networks.
