Learning Outcomes

The first part of the module, the part Organization, addresses future decision-makers who need a profound knowledge of overall business contexts. A general trend of decentralisation causes the effect that such requirements are connected with several totally different positions in companies and other organizations. After passing the course students are therefore qualified to work in a variety of jobs, for example in general management and staff positions. Other possible positions are organizational managers or 'organizing managers'. Organizational managers are employees working on structural and process organizations. ‘Organizing managers’ are all executives facing organizational problems. Therefore, the knowledge which is taught in the module is essential for everyone working in management. The second part of the module offers an introduction in innovation management. The module explains why an independent innovation and technology management must ensure a systematic search for market and product changes and their realization. Adding the analysis of a company’s strengths and weaknesses, holistic technology-based company strategies can be developed. Apart of developing new products and services, new infrastructures and processes are developed. Therefore, new organizational structures are not satisfactory. Additionally, a corporate culture promoting innovation is needed. Such a corporate culture is strongly connected to key persons. These key persons are described as promotors. They have to be found, supported and bound. Additionally, aid must be provided by flexible, project-oriented structures. Furthermore, the topic of effective and efficient teamwork and entrepreneurial thinking in corporations is examined. Additional to the theoretical lectures the exercise offers students the opportunity to revise and expand on selected topics by interactive engagement with scientific papers on innovation research.

Part Organization: - definition of basic terms and concepts - functionalities of different organizational structures in corporations - problems with structural organizations: - delegation and compartmentalisation - evaluation of framework efficiency - problems with process organizations: - temporal, organizational and spatial process design - evaluation of business process efficiency - legal conditions - methods and barriers for changing organisational structures Part Innovation Management: - definition of basic terms and concepts (innovation, degree of innovation, type of innovation, etc.) - influences on innovation management - the innovation process: - initiative: development of innovations - defining the innovative problem - defining goals for innovative decision processes - controlling of the innovation process - interface management - developing alternatives, creativity - evaluating innovative success - human beings as a driver of innovation - the market as a driver of innovation

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The lecture provides the students with the structured theoretical foundations, encouraging the engagement of students in discussion during the lecture. The exercise sessions give room for a more in-depth discussion of the lecture’s contents paired with practical examples to expand on the corresponding topics.
