Learning Outcomes

The course enables students to use computational methods for the creation of advanced design solutions. After completing the course, the students are able to • Use parametric and procedural modelling techniques to develop architectural designs; • Define hierarchical models with these techniques; • Control geometry and non-geometric properties and automate subordinate processes of geometry creation according to design objectives and constraints; • Consider realistic conditions of construction, operation, building performance, and sustainability in the parametric geometry models; • Analyse the interpret results in terms of quality and performance; • Connect these techniques to environment of digital production (computer-aided manufacturing, 3D printing, robotics etc.)

Content

Methods of procedural and parametric modelling that embed dependencies, constraints and objectives form the basis for the development of advanced design solutions. To get familiar with these methods, students perform parametric design and develop exemplary design solutions in selected software platforms of parametric modelling. The focus is on complex geometry and managing dependencies with in geometry and linked to non-geometric properties. Control and automation according to explicitly defined design objectives and constraints is the aim of the course. These skill are linked to realistic conditions of construction and operation of buildings; it is a search for feasible and well-performing solutions. Exemplarily, created solutions are linked to methods of digital production to create (scaled) design products.
