Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the students will be able to • develop and model a building design or retrofit project using digital techniques to model geometric and non-geometric (semantic) information; • define a modeling process including collaboration between design and engineering activities, select the right tools for design and performance evaluation and exchange information in a coordinated way; • define and use criteria of building performance and analyze the multidisciplinary dependencies by methods of systems engineering; • evaluate building performance by simulation, calculation tools and other advanced computation methods integrated in the digital process and critically interpret results; • apply methods of design space exploration to systematically improve the design performance and make criteria-based decisions;

Content

Digital models are a key method for future building design, engineering and construction. At the same time, they form a basis for the development of well-performing designs. The module applies digital methods of digital and parametric methods to model the information of a building design or retrofit project. The modeling includes geometric and non-geometric (semantic) information to evaluate the projects with respect to selected disciplines and the respective performance, such as energy demand, comfort, daylight availability, construction costs, environmental impact, sustainability etc. By means of a systems approach, dependencies between disciplines and building components are identified. On this basis, the digital process of required design and engineering is defined and managed by a process map in order to enable a seamless collaboration between design and engineering activities. The process map servers to select the right tools and to define and to carry out a performance-oriented design process. In this process, simulation tools and calculation methods are applied to determine performance and to improve the design. Methods of design space exploration allow for systematic improvement of the design performance in this process. To save computation time and to speed up performance improvement, substitute models, machine learning or further methods of artificial intelligence optionally evaluate and steer the performance. The result is an iterative optimization and multi-criteria decision procedure integrated in design/retrofit project. A scientific report at the end of the module documents the development and improvement process.
