Learning Outcomes

The Module - qualifies the students to apply the planning phases of the international adaptive management approach “Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation” - deepens the students’ understanding of complex political, socioeconomic, geographical and ecological issues and interlinkages in the context of ecosystem-, conservation- and landuse-management - enables students to critically discuss and present recent projects on sustainable ressource, ecosystem and landuse management against the background of the societal, economic and politcal framework in different regions of the world - deepens the students’ awareness of conflicts between social, economic and ecologic goals - deepens the students’ abilities for efficient groupwork, facilitation and mediation techniques - enables the students to develop conservation and sustainable land use strategies based on the principles of adaptive management and on the basis of knowledge about current local issues within the region of a case study - creates awareness about the interlinkages of ecosystem services and human-wellbeing - deepens the students’ capacity to visualize complex situations and interrelations with the supporting software Miradi which was developed for the rollout of the Open Standards approach

Content

The need for flexible and adaptive solutions to cope with today’s challenges and unforeseen changes in nature conservation and resource management becomes more and more important in an increasingly complex world. Adaptive management is one important skill to overcome these problems. Apart from attending the introductory lectures provided by the supervisors on each step of the conceptualization and planning phase of the Open Standards, the student teams will develop a basic management plan for sustainable resource, land use or ecosystem management following a methodological approach proposed by the “Conservation Measures Partnership” (CMP): The Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation. CMP is a partnership of important conservation NGOs (such as The Nature Conservancy, WWF, Con-servation International, the IUCN Worlds Commission on Protected Areas and many more) that seek common and better ways to design, manage, and measure the impacts of their conservation actions. The Open Standards planning methodology represents a logical step-by-step procedure enabling the course participants to work out a complex situation analysis about the current state of the case study area, considering human, biophysical, social, political and economic impacts on the conservation ob-jects. Based on that conservation strategies and future scenarios on the conservation impact will be developed. The course represents a combination of introductory lectures on theoretical topics and mainly practical exercises which will be carried out in groups. In addition to the fundamental knowledge about an international approach of project management in nature conservation, the following issues will be addressed: basics of group communication, facilitation and mediation techniques, software based visualization of complex situations, adaptive management, stakeholder analysis, presentation techniques, knowledge about applied nature conservation and stakeholder participation, complex situation analysis, introduc-tion into a real case study in the field of nature conservation and sustainable landuse management accompanied by a field trip with the possibility to interview relevant actors of the case study area.
