Learning Outcomes

The students are able to - identify methods of typological analysis and design on different scales and to compare them critically - apply the acquired methods independently for analysis, classification and (further) development of typologies on different scales of planning and to evaluate the results

Content

The students are provided with deeper knowledge on established methods of analysis and applied methods for current typology-related questions of increasing complexity. The course contents are taught with the participation of multiple architectural fields (building science, architectural design, representation, digital tools). Basic knowledge of typology and scale, i.e. the knowledge about the interdependencies of planning scales, the interaction of different scales in planning practice as well as the comparative classification of typological developments using specific cases (e.g. comparison Berlin Block / Barcelona Block) are provided within an integrated session. Furthermore, specific analysis and design methods are provided and applied on a particular typology considering aspects like scale, size or density. By doing so, currently relevant typological questions and developments are investigated. The students develop aspects and criteria of analysis, learn to use comparative visualization (comparative spatial analysis, morphological examination, mappings) and simulation standards (e.g. Space Syntax, Isovist, Y-Graph...) and to document, present and discuss their results within the framework of the seminar. Additionally, skills are acquired to elaborate the topics of the module under consideration of gender aspects.
