Learning Outcomes

The students have the ability • to select and apply appropriate typological analysis and design methods for a specific design task, and to evaluate the results critically. • to develop new building types in the interplay with social and technological changes. • to apply learned analysis and design methods independently for the analysis, classification and (further) development of their own designs in different planning scales and to evaluate the results. • to identify and integrate design aspects with regard to sustainability and gender aspects. • to use methods of presentation, moderation, mediation and foreign languages for the representation and mediation, and to assume leadership tasks in the management of planning and realization processes in the teamwork. • to be constructive and communicative within a heterogeneous international group.

Content

The main focus of the design project is the mediation and application of typological design approaches and methods on the basis of a specific design task. The theme of the design is redefined in each semester according of the current focus. The Typology Design Studio is an introductory project for all students in the first semester of the program. A social and substantive exchange of students from different countries and cultural background is encouraged. The objectives of the Iintegrated Course (IC) are the accompanying mediation and the accumulation of in-depth knowledge of historical, current or future building typologies. The mediation takes place in lectures and comparative analyzes of building types. Students learn precise analysis of typological characteristics of buildings and projects by means of specific modeling, drawing and presentation techniques. These characteristics include, among others, circulation, organisational structure, context, construction, material, detail, program, history of use.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

The design studio is the center of the learning and teaching of the individual and the group. It is the workplace and the place where the contents, objects and basic knowledge of the design theme are initally taught through lectures, workshops, seminars, improptu design workshops and excursions. The student or the self-organized group develops their own design independently. The progress of the project is accompanied by project-critiques. The working method is defined step by step from the concept and the design to the final presentation in front of a jury. Depending on the topic and the aim, students apply different methods of working, such as research, compilation of data, analysis or design alternatives. Hereby media such as sketches, drawings, models, diagrams, mappings, plans, texts, image presentations or similar are used.
