Learning Outcomes

Students understand the system architecture of geographical information systems, know their strengths and limitations, and are able to extend them with plug-ins to add new functionality and provide customized user interfaces. They are familiar with the concept of scripting languages and are able to use geoprocessing libraries and applications programming interfaces of common geographical information software. They are able to combine different software systems and technologies to solve complex geospatial problems where no unified solution is available and to allow automation of recurring tasks.

Content

Architecture of geographical information systems, toolboxes, geoprocessing libraries, application programming interfaces of common geographical information systems, scripting (e.g. with Python), graphical user interfaces, user input, user defined functions and modules, exploring and manipulating spatial data, working with discrete objects and continuous fields, mapping techniques, spatial and network analysis, automation in map generation. Hands-on experience with standard geographical information software environments, scripting languages, and geospatial software libraries.
