Learning Outcomes

As part of this module, the students get to know the interrelationships in the railway system between vehicles, infrastructure and railway service in the context of energy supply and efficiency. They understand the reasons why railways play an important role as a sustainable and environmentally friendly means of transport in the context of the so-called traffic transition. Furthermore, the generation, calculation and avoidance of rail traffic noise, which is considered to be the biggest environmental problem of the railways, is discussed in more detail.

Content

The following topics are covered in the lecture: • Climate goals of Germany and Europe • Generation of greenhouse gas emissions and share between modes of transport • Modal Split in inner-city, regional, long-distance and freight transport in Germany and Europe • Introduction into electric power supply systems for rail vehicles • Energy recovery and feedback into power grid • Energy efficiency of diesel-operated rail vehicles • Dual mode and hybrid rail vehicles • Generation, calculation and avoidance of railway noise
