Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students have: Knowledge: • Maps and great-circle navigation • Definition of and difference between VFR and IFR • Break down a flight into various phases of flight with specific requirements • Structure of the national (and international) airspace • Basic components of a flight plan; flight through national airspace • Air Traffic Control: its tasks and responsibilities • Sources of external information: weather, NOTAM, METAR, TAF • Flight deck systems including displays, user inputs, and aural messages • Navigation functions on flight deck • FMS and auto flight systems • Multi-Crew Coordination (MCC) and Single Pilot Operations (SPO) • Considerations w.r.t. Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operations Skills: • Analysis of a flight through the national airspace system in terms of types of airspace and phases of flights (e.g. STARs, SIDs) • Knowledge of the various task that must be performed to program a flight management systems (FMS) for a certain flight plan • ATM lab: Practical experience flying an aircraft through the national airspace while communicating with ATC Competencies: • Know what onboard systems are involved in operating an aircraft in the national airspace • Understand the interactions with other parties and when flying from A to B (e.g. ATC)

Lecture: • Navigation from point A to B, maps and great-circle navigation • VFR and IFR flight rules • Phases of flight • Structure and organization of the airspace • ATC flight plan • Weather, NOTAM, METAR, TAF • Flight-deck (cockpit) layout and functions • Human machine interfaces (e.g. displays, throttles, etc.) • Navigation functions on the flight deck • Mass, fuel, and ETOPS • Auto flight system • Flight management system • Multi-Crew Coordination (MCC) • Single Pilot Operations (SPO) • Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operations Tutorials: • Airspace analysis • FMS exercise • ATM lab
