Learning Outcomes

Successful participants of this course will have the theoretical, practical and methodological background to implement a database for a certain problem domain. They will gain practical insight to the planning, modeling and the implementation process of a successful database project. The participants will gain experience in project-based work.

Content

During the course of two semesters the students systematically go through the life cycle of a database development project. Teams are assigned a problem domain for which they will ➢ explore and model the respective domain ➢ design a relational schema ➢ realize this design ➢ develop and design a web and/or java frontend ➢ present their progress and result to the other teams Theoretical input will be given on the necessary fields that go beyond the course „Introduction to Database Systems“. This covers the following topics: ➢ Practical database modeling ➢ Web front ends for databases ➢ Introduction to PHP based frameworks ➢ Using the JDBC API ➢ Internationalization ➢ Database server administration
