Learning Outcomes

Successful participants of this course will have developed and refined fundamentals and methodologies of software engineering as an integral part of computer science, and specifically are capable of analyzing software engineering problems with regard to the learned concepts, and capable of realizing valid implementations. The participants will be trained to be proficient in applying quality management strategies as well as current methods and tools of software development processes. They will have gained experience in team work using their social skills.

Content

During the course of two semester terms the students follow a life cycle of a complex software engineering project in a systematic approach. The participants commit to teams and have to complete assignments such as * to research the application field specified by the current project, * to draft a formal specification, * to develop a test-driven implementation of the project's content, * to test the completely integrated system, * to document the system, and finally * to present their results. Before starting the project, underlying software engineering concepts will be discussed, especially those that go beyond the course “Concepts of Software Engineering”. The following concepts will be discussed and applied in the project development stage: * Project Management * System Design * Software Prototyping * Object-oriented Drafting * Software Reuse * Software Testing * Quality Management * Process Improvement

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

During the integrated course the students will implement a complex software engineering project. The practical work is preceded and accompanied by a formal discussion of underlying concepts. At least one presentation related to the project's content and results is expected from each participant during the course. Exercise assignments will train the discussed concepts practically.
