Learning Outcomes

Successful participants of this course will have understanding of the fundamentals of operating systems, such as resource and process management. In addition, they will have been introduced to cost- and resource-effective concepts of computing, like virtualization and thin clients. The second part of the course will deal with networks. Participants will gain the ability to solve given networking problems with the application of the relevant algorithms. The course will further include both theoretical and practical aspects of network modelling, routing, traffic control as well as security.

Content

The course will mainly focus on the following topics: * UNIX-like operating systems * Resource management * Virtualization * Network layers * Network components * Routing in packet switched networks like TCP/IP * Traffic control, including Quality-of-Service (QoS) * Network security Besides this, the exercises will deepen and foster the understanding of the theoretical knowledge by providing concrete and continuous software engineering projects.
