Learning Outcomes

After passing this module students are able to assemble fundamental electrochemical test settings and small battery cells, conduct measuring methods typically used for batteries and design basic battery balancing systems.


The experiments deal with three general topics. At the beginning, the students will build lead-acid-, zinc-air- and sodium-sulphur-cells and test their functionality. Afterwards, battery measuring methods are intruduced. Among others, they include the following: Charge- and discharge characteristics, capacity measurement, identifying the inner resistance, power capabilities and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The module is completed with an experiment regarding balancing issues that occur in complex battery systems.
