Learning Outcomes

After completion participants will have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to read, understand, discuss, present, and summarize and categorize original research in the field of multicore systems and follow original research talks. They are able to provide feedback on each other’s work and to formulate research questions. They are further able to write a review paper about recent multicore systems. The course is principally designed to impart: technical skills 30x method skills 30x system skills 30x social skills 10x

Content

In this seminar we will study the most recent proceedings of top computer architecture and parallel systems conferences (for example, Int. Symp. On Microarchitecture (MICRO), Int. Symp. on High- Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA), and Int. Conf. on Supercomputing (ICS)) and journals (for example, IEEE Micro, IEEE Trans. on Computers, and Communications of the ACM), identify the papers related to multicore systems, make a selection of the papers, and present and discuss these papers in class. We will further write a review paper about the selected papers.

Description of Teaching and Learning Methods

In the seminar students will read recent research papers in the field of multicore systems. Every participant has to give a presentation about two research papers that address a common theme and write a review paper about three recent research papers.

Requirements for participation and examination

Desirable prerequisites for participation in the courses:

It is expected that participants have elementary knowledge of computer architecture and organization (as imparted, for example, in the undergraduate course “Technical Fundamentals of Computer Science II: Computer Organization and Design”). The module “Multicore Architectures” is recommended but not required.

Mandatory requirements for the module test application:

This module has no requirements.
