Learning Outcomes

Students possess knowledge of the principles and characteristics of cloud computing at the practical, as well as, the theoretical level. Furthermore they understand critical questions and current solutions in this area.

Content

At the beginning of the module the basics of running a virtualized data center are considered, as viewed from the perspective of a cloud provider. Based on this, subsequently the module covers topics such as programming of scalable and fault-tolerant applications at the different levels of abstractions of the cloud platform from the cloud customer’s view. Both perspectives are also permeated by higher-level aspects like data protection, confidentiality and economic considerations. The contents of the lecture are based on solutions that were recently presented at conferences and in journals. They are complemented by case studies from leading companies from the cloud sector. The lecture includes: hard- and software virtualization, scheduling, cloud architectures, partitioning, load balancing, replication, consistency and application examples.
