Learning Outcomes

This module deals with the most relevant wireless communication systems and discusses their architecture, interfaces and services. The corresponding air interfaces are explained and compared. As an example of todays broadband mobile systems based on IP technology, LTE is presented in details. System planning and maintenance issues are introduced as well. A special highlight consists of the economic importance and costs of the different components of the system. Then, the module focuses on a fundamental component of modern wireless technology, namely, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology, i.e., using multiple transmission and reception antennas in order to create an additional “spatial" dimension for signaling over wireless channels. The target is to enable students to understand MIMO technology and its main implications and tradeoffs at the system design level.
